The Full Story
The historical city of Sparta, located in the region of Laconia Greece, has been famous among other things for producing excellent quality olives since ancient times. Laconia’s excellent conditions, with hot, dry summers, mild winters and the uniquely rich soil composition create a unique environment for cultivating one of the finest olive varieties in the world, Kalamon olives.
The olive tree has been a very important part of the daily life for the people of the local community. Our family has been cultivating olive trees in our olive groves in Sparta Laconia, for over 100 years. As the fourth generation of farmers, we have grown a deep love and understanding for this tree which has nourished the people of our ancestral land for hundreds of years.
This love has also revealed to us the inextricable links between people, societies and planetary boundaries. The COVID-19 pandemic and the latest political and economic conditions have underlined the importance of a robust and resilient food system that functions in all circumstances. Moreover, in the aftermath of the climate change the increasing recurrence of droughts, floods, forest fires and new pests is a constant reminder that our food system is under threat and must become more sustainable.
We believe that everyone deserves a sustainable food system. We are on a mission to create an inclusive, resilient and fair food value chain benefiting farmers, consumers and the environment. Using the most traditional Greek product -the olive seed- and the traditional agri-sector as a foundation we aim to build a vertical structure which will enable a more business-oriented operation that will combine Greece’s comparative advantages with best practices and business strategy.
In Sustainable Olive Stories we aim to reintroduce a traditional product that has dominated exports and international trade since ancient times and bring this unexploited treasure of the Greek land to every table in the world!
